3 Clarity Within Relationships
f you’re like most people, thinking through the six types of overt-
I ness probably led you to some uncomfortable realizations.
• You may have realized that the person who writes your per-
formance review and controls your pay would probably not
understand or agree with parts of your summary outputs list (a
problem with purpose).
• You may have had the depressing realization that too much of
your workplace effort goes toward no seemingly pertinent result
(a problem with impact).
• Perhaps you were faced with the unpleasant notion that much
of what motivated you to take your present job in the fi rst place
has changed (a problem with incentives).
• You may have come to the painful conclusion that although you
work as hard as you can all day, things haven’t changed because
of it, at least not that you can see (a problem with visibility into
progress).
• Maybe it became obvious that something you really need to
accomplish your workplace purpose is not well defi ned, is not
available, or is out of your control (a problem with resources).
