a way that is both effective in the moment and sustainable over the
long term. As you can see from Figure 3.4, the output-stress ratio is
at the center of your balancing act.
Is it now obvious why an entire section of this book is dedicated
to your node? The balance you strike here determines not only how
productive you are, but also how you are perceived by those around
you in your network. In the early information age workplace, we are
all connected, which means we are all on stage. The way in which you
maintain your balance is your individual marketing campaign, your
announcement to the network about what you value and how you do
things. It is also your own set of precedents, the unspoken tactics you
employ today that become the culture around you tomorrow. When
you are successful and your cycle spirals upward, your success becomes
