getting the right people on the Virtual Bus

Every position in a company, including the mobile workforce, has a par-
ticularly behavioral job demand to it. There’s really no such thing as a
generic job model that would tell us exactly what the behavior needs to
be for a mobile worker. The absolute key is to be able to integrate what
somebody is made up of. For a manager, it’s critical to understand their
drivers and the motivators of a mobile worker so you can coach them ap-
                      propriately. It’s key.

As Jim Collins famously said, getting the right people on the bus is
critical for organizational success. The same is even more true when
                                                    2
taking on new virtual employees. Hiring and training a mobile work-
force, that is, finding and developing great talent who you may not
physically meet with very often, is the focus of this chapter. This isn’t
a small challenge—lots of your employees will be home-based or on-
the-road workers sooner or later. Let’s review the facts again.
