network. In order to enhance the recovery rate of waste glass, a major research
effort has been carried out at PolyU to find practical ways to recycle waste glass
for the production of different cement-based products, such as architectural cement
mortars, concrete paving blocks and SCC. Efforts have also been taken to explore
other potential applications of waste glass in the translucent concrete, renderings,
sub-base, PC and AAC mortars with a view to diversifying the recycling outlets.
Based on the results obtained, the use of waste glass in cement-based products
can not only mitigate the waste disposal concern, but also improve the properties of
cement mortars, paving blocks and concrete due to:
The appealing colours of the waste glass are useful to develop architectural mortars with
an aesthetically pleasing appearance. Moreover, the pulverised waste glass can be used as
a cementitious material to improve the durability properties of cement mortars.
Replacement of natural aggregates by GC can reduce the drying shrinkage and water
absorption of the paving blocks and improve the photocatalytic performance for removing
air pollutants when used together with nano TiO 2 .
The addition of GC can enhance the workability of fresh concrete and reduce the drying
shrinkage of concrete due to its non-absorbent and impermeable properties.
The incorporation of GC can improve the resistance of the glass concrete to high tempera-
tures and chloride ion penetration.
