dedicated to examining ‘heretical sicknesses where the commonsense of
medicine cannot be applied’. Pathologising multiple aspects of
contemporary Japanese culture, the Devil Woman Doctor’s ‘examination
histories’ are less experiments and treatments than exorcisms of the
‘devils’ that her patients invariably see in others rather than in
themselves.
