4. Computer power simulation studies
Large nonessential loads must be tripped with alacrity by the PM system; other-
wise generation will have already collapsed. Power simulation studies must be
undertaken for the scenarios where the PM system functions include automatic
load shedding or starting more generators, etc. Timers can then be set in the PM
system based on the results of the studies. The studies should also determine
whether the standby generators can be started and paralleled quickly enough to
avoid a blackout. If not, more spinning reserve will need to be programmed in.
A failure within the PM system itself should not
1. cause a blackout,
2. cause alterations in the configuration of the main switchboard or generator con-
trols but should detect the fault and initiate an alarm in the main control centre,
3. prevent or impede manual emergency intervention, i.e., the system should
‘freeze’ in a safe state so that operators may take over the function manually.
