CHAPTER

Self-Elevating Rigs
INTRODUCTION
A jack-up rig is a bargelike vessel with steel legs each having racking gear which
allows it to be racked down to the seabed until the entire vessel is lifted out of water.
These vessels are obviously limited by the length of the legs to water depths of
around 300 ft. They are inherently a temporary facility, more suited to drilling and
maintenance activities than production.
FREQUENT DUTIES
1. Drilling
2. Well intervention
3. Accommodation
4. Wind turbine installation
5. Heavy lifting
6. General offshore support (liftboat).
In UK waters, if the well intervention (Duty [2]) is over a fixed platform, a Safety
Case must be written for the combined operation.
MAIN FACILITIES
1. Power generation
2. Position keeping (if applicable)
3. Propulsion (if applicable)
4. Steering (if applicable)
5. Fire and flammable gas detection, fire protection and extinguishing
6. Drainage and bilge pumping
7. Ballasting
8. Emergency shutdown systems (if applicable)
9. Jacking systems.
