High-Speed Applications 187
In any of these choices, the outcome is that the carriers will reduce
their overall cost of operation, gaining more bang for their buck. This
creates the opportunity for the carriers to save money.
End users are continually working with manufacturers and carri-
ers to realign their networks for their own benefit. While engaging
both the manufacturers and carriers, the end-user community can
create new networking strategies, such as
Improved speeds
Increased throughput
New services
Greater connectivity to their remote sites
Redundancy at the access level
Internet access for e-commerce
New marketing campaigns
Regardless of the specific application, the end users are trying to
do one of two things:
1. Make money by increasing access to them from their customers
or by expanding their e-commerce solutions
2. Save money by reducing the number of individual links
necessary to provide higher capacity or increasing the
redundancy without installing additional circuitry
As one can see, the overall goals of the three main characters in
this networking strategy happen to be the same. It is through the
new and improved use of optical networks and switching componen-
try that this will occur for all three players.
Therefore, the next set of applications will deal with the use of
SONET/SDH in a networking environment, along with the benefits
that can be derived. Starting with the beginning stages, the course of
action will include looking at the following:
SONET/SDH
WDM/DWDM
