Newer applications emerge using the hybrid combinations of pas-
sive optical networks (PONs) in a community alongside of the coax-
ial systems serving broadband communications in the business and
residential market. The use of different wavelengths in this market
makes the combinations that much more attractive and economical.
This combined networking strategy with DWDM in the metropolitan
area is shown in Figure 8-18.
