In the future, optical technology and advanced optical switching
technologies will emerge that extend the capability of the optical
layer. These technologies will include optical switching for recovery
from failures as well as expansion of the add/drop multiplexing func-
tion. The first optical cross-connect systems will route a particular
wavelength from one fiber route to another without conversion back
to an electronic form.
