Iliuta et al. [305] proposed a theoretical model based on the model of
Ergun for predicting the pressure drop of dry and irrigated random packings, the
wetted area, and also the liquid holdup. The model used two experimental
constants different for different packing types and dimensions. The prediction
accuracy of the pressure drop is ± 30%, but many of the data show up to 3
times greater error. The prediction accuracy of the liquid holdup and of the
wetted area is about 20%.
