Exercise 7.33 The stretching factors β i , given by equations (7.203)–(7.206) for four rift-
ing phases, depend on the water depth w i at the beginning of the rift phases.
(a) Show that the relative change in the β-factor is
β i w i
=− . (7.212)
β i c 0 − f w w i
(b) What is the change in the β-factor when the water depth increases by w i = 500 m?
Assume that w = 1000 kg m −3 , c = 2800 kg m −3 , c = 3500 kg m −3 , c 0 = 35 km
w i = 1 km and β i = 2.

A sedimentary basin will in general develop very complex geometries through its geo-
history. A discussion of these structures are beyond the scope of this book. Allen and
Allen (1990) give a broad view on basin forming tectonics, the related sedimentology and
petroleum geology. Davis and Reynolds (1996) is a comprehensive text on structural geol-
ogy. Turcotte and Schubert (1982) has an introduction to, and applications of, isostasy.
The two essential references to the McKenzie model are McKenzie (1978) and Jarvis and
McKenzie (1980). An early application of the McKenzie model to study the extension and
subsidence of the North Sea is Sclater and Christie (1980).
