xii Preface to the Third Edition

As other authors will know, the preparation of a textbook is a demanding,
challenging and time-consuming occupation. I have been very fortunate to
receive many encouraging comments on the previous editions and this has
given me the enthusiasm to continue developing the subject material in the
book. I am very grateful to all of those who have taken the trouble to contact
me in the past and I continue to welcome comments and advice as to how the
book could be improved in the future.
