Armand was proud that he and his family had gained citizenship in
the United States after coming from Mexico 12 years ago. His family
insisted he get his high school diploma, and after graduation Armand
secured an entry-level position at a local manufacturing company. A
good friend of the family who had worked there for several years en-
couraged Armand to apply and sang the company’s praises: “Maravil-
loso,” he would frequently say.
But Armand was still leery. In his home country he had grown up
to fear many employers, who often were harsh and cruel to workers.
