                                 The Role of the

                                 Manager, Part 1

First and foremost as a manager your job is to get things
done through other people. ...You are paid to manage, not
                                    perform every task.
                                                           —Mary Ann Allison
                                                             Vice President, CitiCorp

We do not expect you to follow us all the time, but if you
would have the goodness to keep up with us occasionally.
                                                           —Thomas Beecham
                                                             Conductor, The London
                                                             Philharmonic Orchestra
he key relationship in retention is the relationship between
Tthe employee and his or her manager. Get it right and
acceptable retention is almost assured. Get it wrong and every-
thing else will count for naught.
In this chapter and the following, we will examine in detail
the relationship between the manager and his or her employees,
concentrating on those aspects of the relationship that most
                                 positively promote retention.
