6 - PROJECT TIME MANAGEMENT
6.2 Define Activities
According to Section 6.2 of the PMBOK Guide, Define Activities is the process of identifying the specific actions
®
to be performed to produce the project deliverables. Defining activities for software projects is based on the
requirements or features, the project scope, the project environment, and project life cycle selected.
As described in Section 2 of this Software Extension, software project activities, processes, and stages are
detailed in ISO/IEC/IEEE Standard 12207.
6.2.1 Define Activities: Inputs
The inputs for defining activities in Section 6.2.1 of the PMBOK Guide are applicable for defining inputs for
®
software project activities. The extension and adaption of these inputs are provided below.
6.2.1.1 Schedule Management Plan
®
See Section 6.2.1.1 of the PMBOK Guide.
6.2.1.2 Scope Baseline
See 6.2.1.2 of the PMBOK Guide. In addition, an organization’s enterprise architecture, when applicable, is a
®
scope factor that may influence the definition of software project activities.
6.2.1.3 Enterprise Environmental Factors
See Section 6.2.1.3 of the PMBOK Guide.
®
6.2.1.4 Organizational Process Assets
In addition to those listed in Section 6.2.1.4 of the PMBOK Guide, organizational process assets that may
®
provide inputs for defining activities for a software project include governance documents, the project life cycle
model, team velocity measures, scheduling techniques such as SAIV (described in the introduction to this section
of this Software Extension), the cadence of iterations, and workflow measures such as time-in-process statistics
for on-demand scheduling.
Organization factors such as mission and vision statements provide input metadata for scheduling software
projects so that project, program, and portfolio information can be rolled up into strategic plans.
