8.1.3 Plan Quality Management: Outputs
The outputs from planning quality management in Section 8.1.3 of the PMBOK Guide are applicable outputs for
®
software projects. The following modifications also apply to the outputs for planning software project quality management.
8.1.3.1 Quality Management Plan
See Section 8.1.3.1 of the PMBOK Guide.
®
In addition, a software quality management plan should address configuration management topics, including:
(a) version control of source code, object code, and other work products, and (b) control of a definitive media library
for approved versions of electronic files and approved product baselines. Practices such as continuous integration,
closed-loop change processes, and iteration retrospectives are typically specified in a software project quality
management plan. IEEE Standard 730 – Software Quality Assurance Plans [29] contains content to be included in
a quality management plan, including detailed requirements for software quality assurance plans.
8.1.3.2 Process Improvement Plan
See Section 8.1.3.2 of the PMBOK Guide.
®
8.1.3.3 Quality Metrics
See Section 8.1.3.3 of the PMBOK Guide.
®
In addition, a software quality management plan may also contain the quality measurement plan, including elements
such as software size measures, software quality measures, and acceptance thresholds. Software measures may be
based on lines of code, but those measures vary with different programming languages and depend on the coding style
more than the quality of the software. Lengthier code that is well commented and factored into functional modules
may be easier to maintain than highly compressed code, resulting in a lower overall cost of quality. On the other hand,
lengthier code may indicate lack of careful thinking about functionality and quality during software development.
