2 - PROJECT LIFE CYCLE AND ORGANIZATION
The Capability Maturity Models Integrated (CMMI), developed and maintained by the Software Engineering
Institute, include:
• CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV),
• CMMI for Services (CMMI-SVC, and
• CMMI for Acquisition (CMMI-ACQ).
CMMI for Development is a collection of best practices for system and software engineering. CMMI-DEV, V1.3
contains 22 process areas. The process areas are grouped into 4 categories; one of the categories is project
management, which has 7 process areas; they are listed here, along with the corresponding Process Groups and
Knowledge Areas in the PMBOK Guide and this Software Extension.

• Project Planning [Planning Process Group],
• Project Monitoring and Control [Monitoring and Controlling Process Group],
• Supplier Agreement Management [Project Procurement Management Knowledge Area],
• Integrated Project Management [Project Integration Management Knowledge Area],
• Requirements Management [Project Scope Management Knowledge Area],
• Risk Management [Project Risk Management Knowledge Area], and
• Quantitative Project Management [Project Quality Management Knowledge Area].
2.1.4.2 Corporate Knowledge Base
Section 2.1.4.2 of the PMBOK Guide provides examples of information that is typically contained in a corporate
®
knowledge base. Many software organizations maintain corporate knowledge bases that contain information
similar to that in Section 2.1.4.2 of the PMBOK Guide.
®
CMMI-DEV includes the process area, Organizational Process Definition, the purpose of which is to establish
and maintain a usable set of organizational process assets and work environment standards. Also, generic
practice GP3.2 in CMMI-DEV (Collect Improvement Information) states: “information and artifacts are stored in the
organization’s measurement repository and the organization’s process asset library.”
Many software organizations maintain a corporate knowledge base for software engineering and software
project management.
2.1.5 Enterprise Environmental Factors
The factors cited in Section of 2.1.5 of the PMBOK Guide apply equally to software projects. They include, but
®
are not limited to:
• Organizational culture, structure, and processes;
• Government or industry standards;
