158 THE GENERAL APPROACH FOR A SOLID WASTE ASSESSMENT

                                        Reduction in purchasing costs (5)
                                                                                         Impact on organization image (5)
Reduction in waste amounts (10) Reduction in waste disposal costs (9) Low start-up costs (4) Quality improvement (5) Impact on employee morale (5) Impact on safety (8)
                                               Revenue generation potential (4)
                           Reduction in waste toxicity (9)
                                                             Productivity improvements (2)
                                                                           Ease of implementation (7)

         Option SCORE

the team can screen them based on their total score. Alternatives with higher total scores
pass the screening process and become eligible for further evaluation. To determine the
cut-off point, depending on time and money resources, the team could set the threshold
at a specific point value, accept the top 20 percent, or accept the top 10 for further analy-
sis. When first starting a solid waste minimization program it is recommended that the
team select the top third of all alternatives for further screening to compensate for esti-
mation error. Figure 8.24 is an example of a completed screening worksheet.

                 8.8.5 ANALYZING AND SELECTING ALTERNATIVES

After trimming down the list of alternatives via the screening process, the remaining
alternatives should be further analyzed to determine the best fit for the organization to
minimize solid waste and hence include in the program. The analysis process focuses
on identifying the benefits, costs, and drawbacks of each alternative. To accomplish
this, each alternative is evaluated on
