Clearview Elementary School in Hanover, Pennsylvania is an excellent example of an
organization that diverted construction waste during a reconstruction phase. The school
was the first elementary school in Pennsylvania to achieve the leadership in energy and
environmental design (LEED) certification. Located in a mixed-use neighborhood as
part of the Hanover School District, the project diverted 90 percent of their construc-
tion waste from the landfill by recycling materials, such as concrete from the project—
which was removed from the site and reused as clean backfill. The construction
administration supervised the contractor’s performance in managing construction
waste. In addition, the school teaches its students the construction aspects of the build-
ing and its green features in their curriculum. Figures 24.1 and 24.2 show the class-
room renovations and exterior renovations for the LEED project.
Some project highlights include building commissioning, a building integrated sun-
dial, a 30 percent reduction in water use, a 40 percent reduction in energy use, detailed
attention to materials selection, superior indoor air quality, controllable building sys-
tems, and construction waste management. The school district has further committed
to augmenting its curriculum to include the lessons that the building teaches. The dis-
trict will also conduct a student performance study in partnership with a local univer-
sity to compare test results in this daylight facility with test results in its other ele-
mentary schools. Building materials were selected based on life-cycle analysis (LCA)
comparisons considering their recycled content, recyclability, renewability, and the
