Even with this precaution, the tube life was limited, and the jet was liable to become blocked after a few
hours of use. The jet was positioned accurately by means of a micrometer-driven optical rail assembly.
Spray potentials ranged from 500-1000 V, and the optimum operating potential appeared to be about
100 V in excess of that at which spray droplets started to form.
