460 and 480 Da. These materials were use to evaluate the tandem system and the results obtained are
shown in Figure 13.17.
It is seen that a good separation was obtained and the different metals are easily speciated on the basis
of their m/z value. Little if any resolution is lost in passage through the interface, and with single ion
monitoring, the individual metal elements can be selected for exclusive display.

Capillary Electrophoresis Coupled with Inductively Coupled Plasma Ionization and Atomic
Emission Spectroscopy
Olesik et al. [16] developed an interface to connect a capillary electrophoresis instrument to an
inductively coupled atomic emission spectrometer. They developed a device that produced a fine
aerosol from the end of an electrophoresis capillary, that could be introduced directly into the ICP. In
practice, they employed element selective detection, as a trade-off for electrophoretic resolution, to
increase the speed of analysis. The detection limit obtained was about 0.06 ppm.
The capillary was made of fused silica, about 40-50 cm long, 97 µm I.D., and 130 µm O.D. About 10
kV was employed to develop the separation.
