supplemental executive life insurance Benefits in excess of those provided by the employee
benefit plan.
supplemental executive medical insurance Benefits in excess of those provided by the employee
benefit plan.
supplemental executive retirement plan (SERP) Nonstatutory (i.e., nonqualified) pension plans
that begin where the qualified plan ends. Stated another way, these are benefits in addition to the qual-
ified, defined benefits and defined-contribution plan.

surrender value Net proceeds from policy termination.
surrogate stock See phantom stock.
survey leveling Adjusting job value if noticeably heavier or lighter than jobs in the survey.

1099-SSA Social security benefit statement, including taxable income.
takeover The acquisition of one company by another.
tandem grant An award of two different grants with the condition that payment from one propor-
tionately reduces the available payment from the other grant.
target The standard or expected level of performance.
target award Payment for meeting expected level of performance.
target-benefit pension plan Contribution rate is based on achieving desired amount considering life
expectancy and investment assumptions.
targeted gain A future-value approach that calculates the difference between present and future value
of the stock and divides it into the targeted gain to determine the number of options to grant.
target stock See letter stock.
TARSAP See time-accelerated restricted stock award plan and performance-accelerated restricted
stock award plan.
