Using the 3 × 5 approach can help draw out expectations from people who are
either shy or who often do not share openly when simply asked, “What are your
expectations?” It also helps learners become involved early and prompts them to
take ownership for the success of the session.

PLANNING FOR LEARNING
As in many other aspects of life, the prime element for ensuring the success of your
training involves planning. You cannot overplan for a session because there are so many
variables that can impact participant learning. No matter how many times you have pre-
sented a specific topic, I encourage you to use a checklist similar to the sample found in
the Tools for Trainers section of the appendices (Presentation Pre-Session Planning
Checklist) each time you schedule a program. Modify it to meet your needs.
