                    Color
Another aspect to remember related to clothing is color. Psychology experts who have
                                                                                7
studied the impact of color have reported the following :
Men and women from upper class backgrounds are attracted to blue-based red tones,
including burgundy. Interestingly, the color burgundy creates feelings of uneasiness
and distrust in lower-class people because of its richness. Consider the fact that
burgundy has been the color of choice of many royals throughout history.
Dark greens (Lincoln and forest) are also upper-income colors that send a message of
classiness, status, and high price. Remember the rash of forest green vehicles that hit
the U.S. market in the late 1990s and positive consumer response to them?
Blue-green tones are best for attracting the attention of both sexes; however, some
experts find that many men often view women who wear these colors as “easy,” in
the same way they might a prostitute. Even so, research shows that women like the
color on other women and react positively to those wearing it.
Brown on men tends to elicit distrust, however, the same is not true when worn by
                                   women. 8

                    Grooming

As with dress, much has changed over the years for men and women related to personal
grooming and styling. It is still usually safer to stay more mainstream in your grooming
habits. Eccentricities in the length, shape, and color of your hair; makeup that stands
out; glittery nail polish; or facial hair that is extreme (or in some organizational cultures,
facial hair at all) can all detract from your message and should be avoided.

PUTTING YOUR BRAIN TO WORK: ACTIVITY

Think of instances in which the clothing or grooming of a presenter or trainer distracted you from receiving
                    his or her message.

What aspect about him or her was distracting?

How can you use his or her mistake to ensure that you present a professional image each time you step in
                    front of your participants?
