Some casino operators included somewhat more limited family attractions in
their portfolios of tourist activities. Thus, the Hilton built a Star Trek ride along
with related elements, such as a shop selling Star Trek merchandise and a bar
called Quark’s. These themed elements were designed to link seamlessly with the
gambling, especially since people did gamble in the ‘real’ Quark’s in Star Trek: Deep
Space Nine. This is an example of a limited and circumscribed design of attractions
for the family. Others built water parks that would appeal to adults as well as to
families, thus increasing the degree of hybrid consumption at the Las Vegas
hotels.
The attachment of family theme park attractions to hotels has not been an
unequivocal success. There has been a feeling that some adults may have been put
