CHAPTER 15

                   Stop Making Sense

New ideas don’t make sense. In the contemporary order of things,
                   that is.

History is littered with missed opportunities, when individuals or
groups had wonderful new ideas that had all the potential to create
tremendous improvement but never saw the light of day because the
                                          ideas didn’t “make sense.”

How do I know this? Well, my answer won’t make sense to you, so
I won’t try to explain. But I will point out some near misses that, if not
for the efforts of a few determined souls, may not have gotten off the

me to this day that a big bucket of bolts can fly. Well, they did it. The
Wright brothers put it all together. Yes, they did it with the help of da
Vinci and dozens of other pioneers in the physical sciences (see Chap-
                   ter 10, “Collaborate with Genius”).
Did the world beat a path to their cockpit door? Sorry.
“You mean there weren’t hundreds of visionary captains of industry
who saw the amazing potential of human flight?” you ask.
                      Well, no.
“Come on,” you insist. “There had to have been at least a few open-
minded American businesspeople who saw the potential for moving
