CHAPTER 6
LEED Indoor Environmental
Quality
he Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) category of the U.S. Green Building
Council (USGBC) rating system for new construction version 2.2 (LEED-NC 2.2)
Tand version 2009 (LEED-NC 2009) consists of two prerequisite subcategories
and eight credit subcategories that together may earn a possible 15 points (credits)
maximum, not including exemplary performance (EP) points in both versions. The
notation format for the prerequisites and credits is, for example, EQp1 for Indoor
Environmental Quality prerequisite 1 and EQc1 for Indoor Environmental Quality
credit 1 in LEED 2.2, whereas in version 2009 the notation has been modified to IEQp1
and IEQc1, respectively. The new LEED 2009 notation will be used throughout this
book. A compilation of the two versions, associated points, and a summary of major
differences can be found in Table 6.0.0. To facilitate cross-referencing between this text
and the USGBC rating system, the second digit in a section heading, equation, table, or
figure number represents the credit subcategory number for sections that deal directly
with a USGBC LEED-NC 2.2 or 2009 credit subcategory.
The Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) portion deals with materials and systems
inside the building that affect the health and comfort of the occupants and construction
workers.
The two prerequisite subcategories are IEQ Prerequisite 1: Minimum IAQ
Performance (IEQp1) and IEQ Prerequisite 2: Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS)
Control (IEQp2). As is typical for prerequisites, there are no points associated with
IEQp1 and IEQp2.
The points for the credits in the Indoor Environmental Quality category are
individually related to a specific credit under a subcategory. In both versions (2.2 and
2009), there are eight credit subcategories, five of which have multiple credits and three
of which have just one credit and associated point. The eight credit subcategories are
IEQ Credit Subcategory 1: Outdoor Air Delivery Monitoring, IEQ Credit Subcategory 2:
Increased Ventilation, IEQ Credit Subcategory 3: Construction IAQ Management Plan,
IEQ Credit Subcategory 4: Low-Emitting Materials, IEQ Credit Subcategory 5: Indoor
Chemical and Pollutant Source Control, IEQ Credit Subcategory 6: Controllability of
Systems, IEQ Credit Subcategory 7: Thermal Comfort, and IEQ Credit Subcategory 8:
Daylighting and Views.
IEQ credit subcategory 4 has four credits; IEQ credit subcategories 3, 6, 7, and 8 each
have two credits; and IEQ credit subcategories 1, 2, and 5 are all single credits. Each credit
is worth one point in both versions, not including EP points, which will be discussed later.
