          CHAPTER 7

            1. A South African story told to me by Michael Gibbert.
            2. This is an excerpt from an online blog published by the MIT Sloan
Management Review in 2009 by Michael Gibbert, Liisa Välikangas,
               and Martin Hoegl.
            3. Sometimes robust organizations are equated with high-performance
organizations, but this raises the questions of over how long a period
and across what kind of environmental change.

          CHAPTER 8

            1. This is a well-known Finnish word that denotes determination, per-
severance, and ability to continue in the face of adversity.
            2. See Gibbert, Hoegl, and Välikangas (2007). See also Välikangas and
               Gibbert (2008).
            3. With warm thanks to Arne Carlsen for many great conversations and
               references to M. M. Bakhtin.
            4. See also Koestler (1967).
            5. See Sevón and Välikangas (2009).
            6. Also harlequin, jongleur, fou, narr, stultor, scurra, . . . and more.

          CHAPTER 9

            1. Not all ideas progressed to the experimental stage, of course.
There were some ideas that did not prove worthwhile after reflec-
tion, and a handful of teams gave up the effort due to a lack of
time (or possibly interest). Teams varied in terms of heterogeneity
but generally had members from two to six different functional
               departments.
