232 The Ultimate Palm Robot
W elcome to Chapter 9. If you’ve gotten this far into the book, it means
one of a few things: You are a hardcore roboticist, or you’ve skipped
ahead in the book. You have a working robot, or you’re just a speed-
reader and your robot is still a collection of parts sitting on the shelf. You’re ready
to take the next step with your robot, or you’re looking for more jokes.
So, let’s get the joke out of the way, and we can proceed with the chapter.
Dave: Why do elephants avoid using computers?
Kevin: I don’t know. Why do elephants avoid using computers?
Dave: Because they’re afraid to use the mouse.
Kevin (and readers): Groan!
Dave: Which just goes to show, there’s nothing like a good joke.
Kevin: And that was nothing like a good joke.
Dave: Yes, you’re right. My apologies to all the readers out there. Yet, the
joke does have some connection with this chapter.
Kevin: I’m interested to hear what that connection might be. But first, how
much longer are we going to use this style of writing?
Dave: I was thinking we’d use it for the entire chapter. Then we could turn
it into a movie script and become rich and famous or maybe almost famous.
Kevin: And what would be the title of the movie?
Dave: Of Mice and Robots? Sensors and Sensibility? Or maybe, Detector
Gadget?
Kevin: I should have known not to ask. Let’s just get on with it. What do
these awful jokes have to do with this chapter?
Dave: This chapter is all about how to take your Palm Robot to the next
level. That is, how to add different input and output devices to your robot.
Early in the book, we talked about the basic components of a robot. Here they
are again, as a reminder:
