The three options available for the program P O L Y are shown by the block labeled
choice. See Fig. F-2. In option (1), mass M and stiffness K are inputted, and the
characteristic determ inant \ M — X K \ = 0 is reduced to the polynom ial form
CjA'" -f CzA'" * -F ••• +c^ = 0 in the block P o lco f. The coefficients c, of the
polynom ial are then outputted.
If no further inform ation is sought, option (l) is now complete. If, however,
the roots of the polynom ial equation are desired, the decision block sends the
coefficients to option ( 2), where the search for the roots is carried out in the block
P olro ot and outputted as the eigenvalues A.
