Notes for the U.K. Reader
The following notes are provided by the publisher specifically for readers in the U.K.:
1. The prices quoted in dollars ($) should of course be converted to sterling at the cur-
rent rate of exchange (presently about $2 to the pound). It should, however, be noted
that prices in the U.K. are usually somewhat in excess of the straightforward con-
verted sum.
2. The symbol “##” is used to denote “number.” Hence, “resistor #20” is equivalent to
“R20,” and so on.
3. Various items of test equipment of U.S. origin (e.g., Hewlett Packard, Fluke, etc.) are
available in the U.K. However, manufacturers such as Philips, Marconi, Gould-
Advance, and Farnell can, in many cases, provide equipment which will operate to a
comparable specification.
4. The variable autotransformers (variacs) mentioned in Chapter 2 can be obtained from
several suppliers in the U.K. including RS Components (types rated at 0.5 A, 2 A,
and 8 A having Stock Codes 207-936,207611, and 207-9 14 respectively) and
Farnell Electronic Components (a larger range with various types rated at between
0.5 A and 12.5 A and manufactured by Zenith and Claude Lyons).
5. The excellent Heathkit HD-1250 dip meter (also mentioned in Chapter 2) is available
in kit form in the U.K. from Maplin Professional Supplies (Stock Code: HK23A).
Maplin can also provide a cheaper, ready-built dip meter (Stock Code: YN48C)
which covers an almost identical frequency range.
