The black diaspora, as the
            black British sociologist Paul
            Gilroy argues, has succumbed
            to the absolutist notions of
            nationalism and cultural
            difference. In academia, black
            canons are constructed on
            exclusively national bases:
            African-American,
            Anglophone, and Caribbean.

                                              Indeed, political cultures have
                                              not only outgrown the confines
                                              of such ideas as "black
                                              nationalism" but have been
                                              remade in radically new ways
                                              with new significance not just
for the people of the Caribbean
                                              but for Europe, Africa, and
                                              black America.
