omen Take Issue
During the 1960s and 70s, when
feminism was making its presence felt,
most feminists viewed sex as a base
upon which gender was constructed.
Sex and Gender were different. One
advantage of this position was that it
enabled women to stress
commonalties among women. It also
enabled them to postulate differences.
In the late 1970s, feminism confronted
cultural studies directly. Or to use
Stuart Hall's words...
In Women Take Issue (1978), Women's Study Group attacked
the male, middle-class bias of cultural studies.
