              During the  1960s and 70s, when
              feminism was making  its presence felt,
              most feminists viewed sex as a base
              upon which  gender  was constructed.
              Sex and Gender were different.  One
              advantage  of this position was that  it
              enabled women to  stress
              commonalties  among women.  It also
              enabled them to postulate  differences.



              In the  late  1970s, feminism  confronted
              cultural studies directly.  Or to  use
              Stuart Hall's words...

































              In  Women Take Issue (1978), Women's  Study  Group  attacked
              the  male,  middle-class  bias  of  cultural  studies.
