The anti-gay backlash was seen as evidence of the success with
which gay culture had managed to locate itself in the mainstream.
A need was felt for a critical theory that linked
gay affirmation with broad institutional
change. The result was Queer theory, which
settled into universities as the main sites of
gay and lesbian discourses.
