team. The programs were well received and employees quickly
let management know that they felt like their calls for help were
being heard and that many of their needs were being met. In
addition, the company’s managers were able to deal with their
own feelings as leaders and at the same time gain additional
tools and techniques for helping their employees continue to
heal and move forward.
I want to stress here that this chapter is not about terrorism
or the events of September 11. However, it would have been
impossible to write this chapter without discussing the unspeak-
able events that took place in our country on that dreadful day
in September 2001 and interviewing some of the managers who
continue struggling to rebuild workplace morale. In
