Employees Want and Need a Manager Who Cares 131
Manager’s Checklist for Chapter 8
❏ Employees don’t leave companies; they leave managers.
❏ Never assume what an employee needs or wants without
assessing the situation first.
❏ Employees want to feel that who they are and what they
do matter to their leaders.
❏ When managers show they care, they listen; they reward,
recognize, and praise; they give and appreciate honest
feedback; and they instill confidence.
❏ Never hold back on praise. Look for ways to catch
employees doing something right as often as possible—
and then praise them.
❏ Feedback should be frequent and sincere, fast and action-
oriented, helpful and creative, and empathetic and sensi-
tive.
❏ Smart managers create environments that nurture support
and instill confidence in their workers.
