12 Appreciative Leadership
• Award-winning corporate culture change: Appreciative Inquiry was
used successfully by companies such as Hunter Douglas Window
Fashions Division, Nutrimental SA, and Roadway Express. GTE
corporation (now Verizon) received the American Society for Train-
ing & Development (ASTD) “Best Organization Change Award” for
the vanguard work done over two years guided by Dr. David Coop-
errider and Dr. Diana Whitney.
• Community development: Imagine Chicago launched Apprecia-
tive Inquiry as a viable process for community development.
Projects modeled on the Imagine Chicago projects have been
conducted elsewhere in cities, states, and countries with great
success—for example, Imagine Dallas, Imagine West Australia,
and Imagine Chile.
• International education: Practitioner workshops and university
degree programs are offered on the Appreciative Inquiry process.
Case Western Reserve University continues to be a center for
research and graduate education. Three international Apprecia-
tive Inquiry conferences have been held, the most recent in Nepal
in 2009.
• Publications: Hundreds of books including the best-selling Power
of Appreciative Inquiry, the AI Practitioner Journal, and numerous
academic articles have been written and translated into dozens of
languages, thereby extending the international reach of Apprecia-
tive Inquiry.
One last ripple of note: Our work with Appreciative Inquiry
brought us together as colleagues. It introduced us to many of the
people and organizations whose stories fill these pages. And it pro-
vided the seminal worldview upon which Appreciative Leadership is
founded. For all of this we are grateful.
