150 Becoming Metric-Wise
If the result of a query contains not more than 10,000 results it is
possible to ask for a Citation Report. This report shows on the right-hand
side:
• The total number of retrieved records (also available on the original
screen)
• The total number of citations
• The average number of citations per item
• The h-index
It is possible to retrieve citing articles (note the difference between the
number of citations and the number of citing articles), with or without
self-citations (where Clarivate Analytics determines what is a self-citation
and what is not). Two histograms (left and in the middle) show:
• The number of publications per year.
• The number of received citations, per year (normally this graph is
increasing as citations are shown for all publications on the left).
All results are ranked (as a default) according to the number of
received citations; a thick line delimits the h-core. The default can be
changed leading to a ranking according to first author (alphabetically),
publication year and so on.
Besides producing a citation rapport the WoS also allows to “analyze”
the results. Analyzing is possible for at most 100,000 items. When analyz-
ing results are ranked from most to least (but depending on a chosen
smallest number):
• Authors.
• Conference.
• Country or region.
• Document type.
• Funding agency.
• Grant.
• Institution name (university, .. .).
• Language.
• Publication year.
• Source (often journals, but also conference proceedings).
• Subject area (the JCR journal subject areas).
