84 Building a High Morale Workplace

                                 Morale and Motivation—Extrinsic and Intrinsic
When employees are extrinsically motivated, it means that
they’re looking for things outside of themselves that will
influence their behavior to perform at their peak. Extrinsic motivators
are found in incentives like promotions, raises, bonuses, rewards, and
other expensive perks. The impact of these extrinsic motivators on
                       morale can be short-lived.
When employees are intrinsically motivated, it means they’re moved
to take action by something deeper, something within that fulfills them
in some way. Intrinsic motivation has greater impact on morale than
extrinsic motivation in the long run.

only when those people are motivated intrinsically, when they

find meaning and a sense of purpose in their work, desire to
accomplish something worthwhile, and love their jobs. These
are the managers for whom this book was written.

Solutions for the Six Most Common Morale Problems

You may find yourself referencing this chapter again and again

more than any other chapter in this book. Why? Because this
chapter addresses real workplace scenarios and recommends
specific things you can do as a manager when employee
morale is threatened or tumbling. Think of this chapter as your

personal toolkit, with fast solutions, easy-to-use tips and tech-
niques, and possible answers for handling some of the most
                      common morale busters.

How to Make This Chapter Work for You

This chapter presents six scenarios of the most common on-
the-job performance and morale problems. First, read the
Manager’s Morale Challenge. Then, before doing anything else,
think about how you might handle the situation in your own

organization or how well you’ve dealt with similar situations in
the past. Make notes. Next, compare your solutions with the
solutions and techniques offered in the Manager’s Toolkit sec-
tion of the scenario. By combining your experiences managing

people and the recommendations offered here, you’ll have
