Chapter 3 Building big data applications 81

By changing the goal of patient care to be driven digital, we are emerging into the
world of electronic healthcare records (EHR), which means the patient can deliver the
management of their records more efficiently and provide the needed interoperability by
sharing all the data between doctors as needed. There are governance policies that need
to be implemented for this transformation to happen successfully.
There are layers of complexity, privacy, compliance and regulations, lineage, sourc-
ing, tagging, metadata, and management rules that need to be implemented. To create
more details of information processing there are associated data elements that need
integration and appropriate metadata added. The outcome we are expecting is some-
                 thing like this.
In Fig. 3.6 we have shown the details of the people who are involved in providing
healthcare, the data that is created in the healthcare and the process that are used to
manage and deliver the required healthcare. The complexity is present across all the
layers and in all the cases the most complex tasks are in the process components while
the security layers between people and data are very complex to manage on a daily basis.
The new age of healthcare will need this interoperability platform to be built and using
the big data platform technologies along with REST API we can definitely create this. The
details of this will be discussed in a later chapter.
As we see the information layers and its complexity, there is another use case to
discuss where the actual complexity needs to be replayed multiple times to deliver the
real value, it is the use case of research. Fig. 3.7 shows the use case and the process we
follow in the research across labs. The labs across the different areas of research consist
