78 • CEO Material: How to Be a Leader in Any Organization
Everyone needs some feeding of their ego, but if yours is insatiable,
you’re not a leader.
You derail confidence others have in you if you
■ Blame others or things but never yourself.
■ Think you have the best answer even though you don’t have a
lot of information.
■ Feel victimized.
■ Unbecomingly overcompensate as an adult for what you feel was
denied you at puberty.
■ Brag, boast, and claim credit.
■ Second-guess people or presume a hidden agenda.
■ Assume that you know it all and cease seeking knowledge. (One
manager told me, “The problem with being so smart is that I
think everyone else is stupid.”)
■ Don’t listen because you think you’re better, smarter, etc.
■ Are narcissistic.
■ Are rude, browbeat people, are self-centered, and abuse your
power.
■ Use “I, I, I,” and “me, me, me” a lot.
■ Drag your feet in decision making out of fear of being wrong.
■ Think they need what you’ve got and that no one can replace
you.
■ Have a false humbleness.
■ Are self-centered and must have it all be about you.
Everything I write about in this book—everything in life—takes a
degree of self-confidence. Everyone wavers at times. At whatever level
you are, let it be a personal goal to increase your confidence daily. Do not
succumb to life, which tries to decrease it.
