3.8 CORROSION OF UNDERGROUND PIPELINES
The gas and liquid transmission pipelines sector is part of the oil and gas industry.
The size of the sector is large as shown below. This sector consists of 217,000 km
(135,000 miles) of hazardous liquid transmission pipelines, 34,000 km (21,000 miles)
of crude oil gathering pipelines, 483,000 km (300,000 miles) of natural gas trans-
mission pipelines, and 45,000 km (28,000 miles) of natural gas gathering pipelines.
Figure 3.6 summarizes the transmission pipeline sector. In the United States, there
are nearly 60 major natural gas transmission pipeline operators and 150 major
