Another feature of these catalogues is the presence of various status symbols
such as mobile phones and camcorders, for example in the Sitare and Hilye cata-
logues. The models are photographed with symbols of modernity. Consequently,
these catalogues offer symbolic gratification to the consumer and thus associate
their products with socially desired values. Furthermore, veiled women pur-
chase these veiling products in order to be different from other female members
of their Islamic community and from the rest of the society. However, the acces-
sories used in the photographs of the models connect the veiled women to the
consumption patterns of modern capitalist society.
