snacks and going out you have to calculate about £40 per day (you can make this as
expensive as you like).
Role of negotiator A
You had arranged to save a good sum of money. That is why over the past three months
you have worked practically every Saturday night as a waiter/ waitress in a pizzeria. You
have also economized a great deal. You have saved about £900 and really want to spend
it on a great holiday, preferably in a very luxurious hotel. Recently you bumped into
another friend who told you that she too likes that sort of luxurious trip. Financially, it
was no problem for her. She also told you that if your travel partner drops out she would
like to go on holiday with you. She didn’t feel like going with three people.
Today you and the friend with whom you made the original plan are getting together
in order to decide how much money you want to spend on the holiday. First decide for
yourself the amount of money you want to spend and then think of a negotiating strategy.
Stick to the information that is provided.
Role of negotiator B
When you made the arrangement you were planning to save a lot of money for this trip
and to find a part-time job. You did not manage to find the part-time job, but you have
saved £750 through a lot of economizing. In the meantime you’ve found that you also
want a new DVD player. You have just been offered a used one by a good friend of yours
for £80. He is aware of your holiday plans and has already told you that you could pay
him later for the DVD player, but in three months at the latest. You really don’t want to
take him up on this offer because you feel bad when you owe money, especially to
friends.
Today you and your friend are getting together to decide how much money you want
to spend on the trip. Decide for yourself first what the maximum is you might be willing
to spend and also decide on a negotiation strategy. Stick to the information given.
Role of observer
Evaluate the way in which both negotiators have staged the meeting. Use Figure 15.1.
Evaluate the role play according to the guidelines of Appendix B on role play (pp. 186–
191).
