222 Critical Theories of Mass Media
unequal media treatment given to Private Lynch and Rachel
Corrie–aUS peace activist killed by the Israeli army on
16 March 2003.
13 See Baudrillard’s ‘Whatever happened to evil?’ chapter in
Baudrillard (1993) for a full discussion of this theme.
Conclusion
1 It is interesting to note in this regard that the style of wearing
jeans pulled low down past the hips along with unlaced sneakers
stemmed from the fact that inmates have their belts and shoe-
laces removed upon entering prison. The symbolic protest against
the social order signified by the subsequent adoption of this style
by socially alienated black ghetto youths, however, is fatally
undermined once it becomes just another commodified ‘look’.
2 The (il)logical extension of this process is one in which Irish bars
in Ireland itself begin to adapt their own content to reflect the
‘reality’ of Irish theme bars elsewhere in the world. This illus-
trates what Baudrillard means with his notion that in the
simulacra the model begins to dictate terms and conditions to
the prior reality.
