courses be a mandated prerequisite to health topic or group - specific courses. Instead,
the model is designed as a conceptual guide for the application of competency - based
perspectives to specific health issues and populations.

For example, a student could learn in an introductory course that culture, ethnic-
ity, religion, and socialization influence the health status and practices of most popula-

tions (Spector, 2004). In competency - based courses the student could learn about
culture - related aspects of needs assessment and program planning, implementation,

and evaluation. In a group - specific course that focuses on “ health in traditional Asian
American communities, ” the student could be guided to apply the previously learned
concepts and health education skills in order to more fully understand and address in a
culturally sensitive manner such things as the cultural reasons for coining, a practice in
some traditional Asian communities of scraping the skin with a coin to release “ illness -
causing spirits ” (Spector, 2004). A student could then be placed in an internship site
where the experiential application of what has been learned produces a more refi ned
                       perspective.
