Objective Draft a clear vision and definition that are relevant to the
                                           organization.
Purpose Ensure that the enterprise (or program) has a clear
                                           definition of data governance.

               Business Benefits and Ramifications

Starting the vision with a clear first cut at the definition of DG will result in a smoother process to
define a vision. The resulting elevator speech is something that the entire team and, eventually, the DG
               managing framework should memorize.
The business will begin to recognize that data governance is part of the program to manage
enterprise data and informationdnot the end. It is the means to achieve the end. Hopefully, this was
stated in your vision that ties DG to ensuring a faster, more effective, and efficient organization that is
positioned to achieve competitive advantage in a dynamic environment.
               Approach Considerations

Keep in mind that you are looking for comprehension. It is not going to come easily. (We learned this
the hard way.) Regardless of how wonderful you believe DG is in concept, remember that nearly
everyone you are dealing with thinks:
               • It is already being done (they will be surprised).
               • DG does not merit the same status as financial controls or compliance because it is just data.
Be simple and elegant in your definition. The proof of elegance will come from how concise the
               elevator speech is.
               Sample Output
The following is a batch of sample definitions, all of which are the real deal and are in use:
d Data governance is a business process separate from data (or information) management that affects
the entire business by designating people, process, and technology using rules, monitoring, and
                  enforcement with culturally acceptable enforcement.
d Data governance is a framework of accountabilities and processes for making decisions and
monitoring the execution of data management. (financial organization)
