Summary 139
Approach Considerations
Prepare a standard road show (i.e., a PowerPoint deck) and plan on many one-on-one sessions. Do not
have one massive overview session and call this task complete. Gather individual impressions and
factor those into your future presentations and orientation sessions.
Sample Output
See the appendices for some sample DG orientation material.
Tips for Success
If you are the leader of a DG effort, you should be the one to handle this chore. If you are not the lead,
take the DG leader with you. If you can get a senior executive to kick this off, so much the better.
SUMMARY
Designing how the DG program is going to operate is no doubt a key step, but it is important to realize
that you are not designing an organization in the sense of a separate department or functional area. You
are really putting functionality into place within the existing organizational hierarchy. Granted, there is
an implied hierarchy being defined here, but it is really a communications framework.
The tasks in this step can be done in parallel with or wrapped around the other activities required to
initiate a DG function. However, make sure you take the definition of required functionality seriously
and apply a diligent process to appointing the most effective group of people who will support and
sustain the processes required to enact data governance.
