Most people presume their feelings are communicated
mainly by the things they say, but most of the time our emo-
tions are expressed through nonverbal cues. In his book, A
Whole New Mind, Daniel Pink explains:
“Since emotion is conveyed nonverbally, to enter anoth-
er’s heart, you must begin the journey by looking into
the face.” 10
The brain’s wiring routes all of your feelings—everything
from minor moods to overwhelming emotions—directly
to the face. These emotions are instantly displayed, auto-
matically and unconsciously, through the movements of
close to 200 facial muscles. You can make a conscious
effort to conceal or suppress how you feel, but seldom
will you pull this off successfully.
The muscles that surround our eyes are especially designed
to express the subtleties of emotions. This highlights the
importance of eye contact, and helps explain why in social
